Myron,

I believe the reverse is true also. Players or ensembles who are
conversant with the more traditional music play with better
understanding of the contemporary literature. My undergrad clarinet
professor told me (when I told him I wished to jump in to "20th Century"
music that if I didn't have a grasp on what happened before, what is happening
now
will not make a whole lot of sense. I also believe that if the performer
can make better sense of it, that will carry to the audience. I helot of
contemporary music done technically correct but with not concept
of phrases, forms, etc.
