Dan Leeson recently mentioned Percy Grainger's admiration for the music
of one Arthur Fickenscher. I have to admit that i had never heard of the
man, but did find an article on Fickenscher in Baker's Biographical
Dictionary. Based on his development of an instrument to play an
octave divided into 60 equal parts and the titles of some of his works,
he sounds like the guy Grainger was talking about.

Is there anyone out there from the University of Virginia, where
Fickenscher headed the Music Department from 1920-1941? Maybe
the University archives has some more information. Maybe he even
wrote something for the clarinet?!?
