As I understand it, BITNET is a separate system of networks that keeps its own
address system. So an internet message has to be routed to one of a few
gateways where it is handed over to BITNET which then takes it from there.
Some of us are connected to an internet host that is smart enough to recognize
BITNET in an address we try to reach and automatically add the necesarry
routing. But for other users, you have to find an appropriate gateway
address. As DAN says, one for Klarinet is
KLARINET%VCCSCENT.BITNET@-----. But for other
BITNET addresses I need to reach, I use a closer gateway than vermont. Your
local internet host may be able to tell you what to use to put the least
strain on the systems.
