The effect/role of transients is very well known to the electronic music
experts. My brother was working with Moog synthesizers and various
experimental systems in the mid-70's and got me involved in an
experimental electronic music organization and a lot of the experiments
involved inventing circuits that would control not only the mix of
harmonics generated for a particular tone but the "shape" of the attack,
duration, and release. This was all tied to listening experiments to find
out what it is that makes us able to distinguish a clarinet from a piano
(or a dropped brick, for that matter).
