There are probably going to be a lot of responses to the request for
opinions on composition scoring software. There are several such
packages and each has advantages and disadvantages. I use FINALE
and, except for the fact that it is a human engineering nightmare
(with poor people-skill considerations), it does exactly what you
want it to do. It allows you to enter the various lines of a score,
it plays the work back, it transposes, prints out beautiful output
both score and parts, etc. It requires WINDOWS and your printer must
have post script capabilities. It runs on IBM compatible PCs and
I believe there is a version for Macs. Input is either by playing
the lines on an electronic device (such as a keyboard), or one note
at a time.

There is a teaching package in it, but if you don't have a European
rep. who you can call to get assistance from time to time, then you
are going to have a big FAX bill. I was unable to get myself off
the ground alone.

Other packages have been mentioned that are, supposedly, easier to
use and learn. FINALE has a lot of function, most of which I never
use, but one never knows how much you will demand of it.

Mostly, how I use it is to create the musical examples that I include
in musicological papers that I submit to various journals. It is
easy to use in conjunction with WP51, for example.
