Dan...There's no question that the amount of preparation time for
contemporary pieces far exceeds the tried and true traditional music. But I
wonder if this is a consideration of the management/conductor who chooses
repertoire. I agree with you that economics are a major factor, but I feel
that those economics are more a question of 1) will people actually buy
tickets to hear contemporary music performed, and maybe more importantly, 2)
will the wealthy supporters of and contributors to major orchestras donate
large sums to hear untried or adventurous pieces. While perhaps a simplistic
generalisation, I think most of these "heavy" contributors are older and more
conservative members of our society, and their musical likes may also be
older and conservative. There are exceptions, but I see this as a trend, or
entrenchment, in our orchestral programming. Salonen in Los Angeles is
making some inroads here, with the support of management, but my feeling is
that it is often like pulling teeth. Lee Callet
