To Chris--

One quote that I heard all too late regarding "darkness" versus
"brightness" and all that, was "Never confuse darkness with dullness!"
For years, under my undergraduate instructor, I made that mistake, and
played with a dull, noncommittal sound. Now, I
try to focus on some other analogy rather than the brightness/darkness
one with my students, focussing rather on the "shape" or the "vowel" of
the sound, or the amount of "focus" in the sound. This way you can
achieve the same thing without falling into any traps. Also, I use the
words "covered" vs. "raw" to describe the sound. Does this make sense?
(By the way, I keep searching for a word other than "raw," but this is
the best one I have right now. Any suggestions?)

I may have confused the issue a little, but at least, I'm explaining that
it is possible to describe clarinet sound effectively and completely
without ever saying "bright" or "dark."
