If you're feeling bold, you might want to try Carter's Esprit Rude/Esprit
Doux. It's HARD, but very very cool. It's short enough that audiences
tend to like it (in SF, anyway). Don't rush into it ... I checked my
calender after the first time I played it and figured out that the flutist
(you'll need a very good one) & I spent 20 minutes PER BAR rehearsing the
thing. Even if you never end up performing it, after working on it for a
while, it might make you revise your conception of difficult.
