I am even shorter than you and Michael (5'3") and have learned to negotiate
playing the extended range bass clarinet.

When I first bought my bass eight years ago, I found some high-density foam
rubber large enough for a seat cushion and used that in the chairs. Also
bought a bar stool, one of these unfinished types for practicing. Also paid
attention to my posture. Found out most of the time when I can't use my bar
stool, if I sat straight enough, I was able to play without sitting the
instrument out, etc.

Glad to see there are taller people with similar situations!
