Linda - Mitchell Lurie reeds indeed are very consistent, and a bit softer
than Vandorens of similar strength. They are also smaller in dimension
than Vandorens, which may account for the difference in sound. Some
people prefer the Premium because the cut is vaguely similar to Vandoren,
but the "proletatarian" cut works just fine for others. I guess the whole
issue boils down to how much you value consistency (my non-major students
with little time for reed work value it greatly) and how much time you
have to work with Vandorens to adjust them to their maximum potential,
which *may* yield better results. One othe observation - even on an
otherwise nice ML reed of appropriate strength, the altissimo register
seems to run a bit flatter in pitch than on a Vandoren. I have no idea
why, but I've experienced it with many students on all types of
mouthpieces and clarinets??!
