Thanks for all the replies about my "bad day".

Here's the conclusion to any who care...

I found out that the tryouts were not for chair tryouts, just to divide
the 146 band members into two groups--Concert and Symphonic Band. The
results were just mere rumors...(I scored highest, not her). I was
enlightened by reading all the replies. As section leader, I made it so
that there aren't really "chairs". Instead, we will be rotating parts
for every song. That way, everyone has experience with each part. We
really have a great section--better yet, a good band. Today, the first
day of Symphonic Band, no one spoke when the conductor was on the
podium. We were actually in balance! I'm looking forward to this year's
concert season!
