Hi, Chris! I'm a retired science teacher, and I'm really enjoying your
quest and the responses you are getting. I'm sure you have noticed that
the clarinetists on this conference embrace a wide variety of vocations.
In addition to professional musicians you can find physicians,
engineers, and, of course, students like yourself. Their common ground
is their love of clarinet playing.

Larry Liberson was right on when he advised you to keep all your options
open. He very appropriately compared the job of symphony musician to
professional athlete. The field is very competitive, and there are only
a few positions where one can make a decent living.

Although we all love music and love to play, many of us can also find a
lot of personal satisfaction and fulfillment in our "day job." Since
you are obviously a good student, you might want to seriously consider a
vocation which would reasonably assure financial stability in your life,
and then play clarinet as a second job, or even as an avocation.
