I've noticed that some wind ensembles at the University of Oregon here in
Eugene have a policy of rotating players from between first, second and
third clarinet parts from piece to piece in a program. I've heard of
other schools with a similar policy. The idea is to eliminate the
competition and promote a wider experience among the players. Judging
from the unpleasant experiences with challenges and all reported by some
on this net recently, seems to me that this system would be welcomed in
many places!
