I lived in central NY state for four years and never oiled a horn or had
one crack. I asked my repairman about maintaining moisture in the case,
and he offered the advice that "Dampit" type moisturizers were too "wet"
and could make the springs rust unless used very carefully. He suggested
orange peels, which I still use in the coldest, dryest parts of winter
here in the "sunny south".

Regarding oiling, I've heard the story from oboists that some maker
(Laubin?) took a piece of scrap grenadilla and left it in a pan of bore
oil for a year, then cut it in half to determine the penetration of the
oil. It was less than 1/2 millimeter. Conclusion: oiling doesn't do much,
unless you're careless, in which case it fouls your pads!

I see repairmen on the list from time to time, and would be interested in
a more professional maintainence opinion than my own.
