A thought following our discussion about national styles...what
about sounds appropriate to various works? A while back I played a
recital featuring (among other works) the Debussy Premiere Rhapsodie and
the Brahms f minor Sonata. I used different reeds, because I wanted a
sound for the Debussy that would be ethereal and diffuse for the opening,
and a bit edgy for the end. Meanwhile, I wanted a fat, round sound for
the Brahms. Also, I use a different barrel (currently an Accubore - the
kind with the cut-outs) for orchestra, when I really need to project,
than I do for chamber music. (The other works on my recital were the
Lutoslawki Dance Preludes and the Weber Grand Duo, which were both OK
with the Brahms reed, although I was more aggressive with the
Lutoslawski.) I try to emulate singers, who would not use the same
sound/style for different composers. Any thoughts??
