I remember playing contra-alto several decades ago at the U. of N. Col.
If I remember right I used bari sax reeds. The interesting thing, though,
was the stand. I turned my right foot on the side and rested the instrument
on the instep! There was also a contra-bass sitting next to me. We both
played whichever part happened to come with the set except on the VERY rare
occasions that there were two parts. That was an interesting year--contra-
alto in the band, bass cl. in the Univ. orch. and Greeley Phil., sax in the
pit orchestra and jazz ensemble, elec. bass in a club band, recorder and
crummhorn in the collegium, as well as singing in the Univ. choir. Oh, to
be young--er again!
