When I was just getting started in the clarinet takin' to contest
business my teacher and I discussed vibrato and when to use it (contest
literature is all Mozart or Weber). He gave me an analogy which fit the
attitude of the time. He said that if the judge was younger and I felt
real confidant to try it but if the judge was older to stay away from it.

Well I ended up being real nervous and losing some breath support which
gave me some vibrato that the younger judge complimented me on. So I
guess I was lucky. Do you think that it is still a "new generation"
thing getting started with younger players?
