I thought I'd better do the introduction bit here --- while I
have contributed a couple of times to the list, I've mainly been
a lurker.

I've played the clarinet for 38 years, and I've been playing in jazz bands
for about 35 years. While I've mostly played Dixieland and have played
with some very traditional groups both here (near Chicago) and in
Baltimore, my roots are in the mainstream. Recently I've had the good
luck to be a substitute in bands with many fine Chicago area musicians,
and it's been a real treat (e.g., I'm at Andy's tomorrow night with the
Max Hook sextet).

This list has been wonderful for me, because I'm a very unschooled
musician. I've had two day-job careers, first teaching French and the
second in libraries, and music was always a sideline. So I'm learning all
kinds of things from you all about what I've been doing (or what I should
have been doing). Many, many thanks to you all.

Now, back to lurking ...

John
