Subj: perhaps a stupid question, but ...

I've been following with interest the ongoing discussion of the illustration
of Stadler's (sp?) basset clarinet, but I must admit that I'm a bit confused.

Various members of the list have made reference at different times to both
"basset clarinet" and "basset horn" (can the basset hound be far off? and
the bassinette ...)

In _general_ terms, is it correct that by "basset horn" people are referring
to a clarinet pitched roughly in the range of an alto clarinet, while by
"basset clarinet" they are referring to a soprano clarinet (in one or another
of the conventional keys) which has an extension to allow it to play pitches
below written low E (or Eb if I've followed correctly the references to full
Boehme system clarinets made in recent months)?

I looked through some books on antique instruments at the city library, but
I didn't find much regarding the basset clarinet, so I'm still in the dark.

Thanks in advance for some enlightenment!
