Dear Dan,

Congratulations on your recent E-mail messages about Stadler's basset
clarinet!
Pamela Poulin has really done some outstanding research.
Question one: can you electronically send this drawing (or shall we say
"publish" this drawing) on E-mail? It would be a wonderful service. I
am told that this requires a doodad called a scanner.
The bulbous bell alone is thrilling, but even more thrilling would
be any discernable views from this drawing of between-the-fingers
chromatic keys. If we think we see them (and we think we trust this
drawing) then the vexacious question of the whole notes in the
development of the Concerto - middle or low C-sharp and D-sharp - might
be closer to solution. Also it would be great for those of us who make
instruments to see a picture of the extension mechanism. (The Querpipe or
Querrippe, whichever it is or was.) Also, it would be nice actually to
see the mysterious hervorragende Oeffnung.
Let me close by reminding you of a time when you met Eric Hoeprich
(pronounced Hope-rich, not Hoeprich). This was when you enlivened our
basset horn trio concert at Stanford by cheering us from the front row.
It was a fine bit of enthusiasm that we needed then!

Best,

Bill McColl
