Cary mentions that period basset clarinets were discovered in the 70s. My
comments were specifically to Stadler's instruments and still stand. His
appear to have been the first and no example of them was ever found until
Hoeprich found the program from his performance in Vilnius, Lithuania.

There was never a doubt that the clarinet's compass was different in the
18th century, but exactly what Stadler's clarinets looked like, and what
their compass was could not be confirmed until a picture of his own
instruments could be authenticated (or until the instrument itself was
identified). This seems to have now happened though Hoeprich has not
written on it.

When told of this by Bob Levin from Harvard who is doing a program with
Hoeprich, I asked him to inquire if Hoeprich would object to me mentioning
this news on KLARINET and was told that he would not mind at all.
