Thanks for your fascinating posting!

A bulbous bell normally belonged to the short-lived "Clarinette
d'amour". That Stadler's basset was so equipped has interesting
implications...!

Question for you or anyone who has basset experience: can the basset
notes overblow satisfactorily? That would provide a useful alternative
to most of the throat register, I'd think, and provide some incredibly
useful and musical alternate fingerings. I find that the overblown
B-flat from the low E-flat on by full-Boehm indispensible that way - and
I wish I had more low notes that could do the same! If it'd work, I
think it ought to be the standard - which would seem to be what Mozart
thought, too!
