I, too have had to play louder to be heard in a band environment. When
I switched from Rico Royals to Vandoren V12s, my volume and control both
increased. The tradeoff was a lot of huffing, puffing, gasping, and
wheezing until my body adjusted to the harder reeds. The nice people at
The Woodwind tell me that, according to their chart, #3 V12s are about
1/4 grade harder than the Ricos.
