Dan L. (in particular):
There are alleged to be players in Spain and Italy who play everything on a B
flat full Boehm anyway. What is your opinion of THESE chaps? If I play in the
Brahms violin concerto again, I will still not change to my B flat for the slow
movement, anyway; why play on a flat cold instrument when the parts (both 1st &
2nd) are quite easy to transpose? (Moving the goal posts a bit here ......).
Incidentally, if you know the Mendelssohn "Melusine" overture, why is there an
intrusive section for clarinet in C in the 1st clar part? He actually keeps the
original key signature as well, so a transposer has to imagine more extra
sharps than usual. Are you (DL) in favour of picking up a (cold) C intrument
for this passage? (I don't have one - nor does anyone else I commonly play
with ...).
