Greetings all. I'm an amateur clarinettist who, after a summer of
chamber music is playing principal clarinet in a 55-member wind ensemble.
Our first rehearsal was last night. Not surprisingly, I find I have to
play quite a bit louder. But I find that in increasing the volume I
substantially lose control over tonal nuance and colour. Does anyone
have suggestions how to get over this? Will it just improve naturally as
I continue? Does mouthpiece, reed, and barrel make a big difference
(Dan's (and others') point taken).

I played in the same wind ensemble (same position) last year and didn't feel
a problem. Two contributing reasons -- this year we are bigger yet we have
one first clarinet desk as opposed to two. More importantly, I feel I
have developed quite a bit as a player in the past year, so I am noticing
things I did not notice before, or were preceded in importance by
something more glaring.

Thanks for any advice, Martin
