We are playing the Petrouchka this week and I have never played the original
1911 ballet before. In it there is an extended solo for the clarinet and
bass clarinet in octaves which the clarinet plays on A and the bass on B-flat.

The bass part goes down to low d and I was wondering if such a note existed
on the bass clarinet as early as 1911. And if not, then the part must have
originally been for bass in A which could play that note as low written e.

Does anyone know the history of the use of bass clarinets in the early part
of this century and if they had a low D on them?
