I played a Ridenour mouthpiece all the way through high school and
college. I found that reaming out the bottom of it a teeny bit helped
because it didn't take quite enough air. Now that I have more skill and
wanted a bigger sound I switched to the Selmer C85 120. I can't recommend
it for students, though, because it is a little difficult to control. The
big tip opening allows for tons of flexibility.

For students, I agree with the folks that suggested the Vandoren 5RV Lyre.
That was my first "real" moughpiece. I also would recommend a Selmer HS*
or a Pine (although those are expensive).
