Ah, yes, on the Klarinet list for only a month, and we finally get around to
mouthpieces :) I too recommend the B45 to students, along with several others.
5RV lyre, Gigliotti, Combs (although they've changed, including the facing
designation, and I'm now not sure which is which), all capable of working well
for a student, and readily available. But no one mouthpiece works for every
player, so trial is the most effective way to find a mouthpiece to suit a
student. Some retailers (including mail order, with large selections) will
allow a few day's trial of several mouthpieces, which can work well if you wish
to replace stock mouthpieces for a few students at a time.I agree with D.Oehl
er
about the virtues of the B45, and prefer the rebverse Bonade ligature. In fact,
I prefer it to every plastic lig I've ever tried, because it seems to me that

the plastic ligatures don't hold firmly enough to "focus" the sound the way
I'd like. Some years ago, Lee Gibson did an analysis of ligatures for
"Claranalysis" in The Clarinet, and found weight to be a significant attribute,
though not in the "heavier is better" vein.Check it out for a more complete
choice of ligatures.

Good luck with the search (and if you find that elusive great old Chedeville
(Kaspar, etc.!!), please write directly to my e-mail address ;) with no
