Some people may shoot me for saying this, but I don't care for the Vandoren
B45. I think it is quite resistant, and plays on the high side of the pitch.
Try a Vandoren 5RV, or perhaps a Scott (in Lansing, Michigan); Robert Scott
has a reputation for excellent work, and I believe his mouthpieces only cost
$75. As far as ligatures go, anything is better than the stock ligatures that
come with student models, but try a regular or inverted Bonade; they are
quite widely used, inexpensive, and work very well.
