This is a very complex issue.Finale is the most used software because it is
MIDI interactive. However, it is not the software used by the publishing
industry. Many, if not most, of the publishing industry use Score (San Andreas
Press) for music publishing. While it does have MIDI implimentation, and third
party software for importing and exporting complex MIDI files for entry and
playback, it is not interactive like Finale (problems for composer but not the
engraver). With Score (at least after I had learned it) I can do any complex,
avant garde score. Finale permits much, but must often be tricked. You also
might consider Music Printer Plus by Temporal Acuity. It is also MIDI
implemented like Finale but much easier to use. It does not use Postscript
printing, and thus doesn't have the flexibility of Finale or Score. Encore is
excellent to a point. You might consider a program like Cakewalk 3.0 for
windows or cubase-score. Both are sequencers, allowing you to enter music
quickly (with keyboard or wind controller) then print the score out.
Cubase-score has a more advanced music editing section that cakewalk, but no
where near Finale. There is also Nightingale from temporal acuity for the Mac
and Mosaic for the Mac. The good news, is that once you have paid the price of
learning the software it is at your service.
