For the "Rhapsody in Blue" solo, there are a couple of common tricks.
First, just slur up to the D on the fourth line of the staff. Do a gliss
for the remaining seventh. (For most of us mortals, glissing over the
break is impossible). I usually use a combination of fingers and mouth to
make it work. Drop your jaw and make sort of an "AH" sound with the back
of your throat. This should drop the pitch a little, and make your tone
more flexible and less likely to squeak. Then slide your fingers off of
the holes one at a time until you get to the top. Once on the high C, set
your embrochure back to normal to bring it up to pitch, and add a little
vibrato for the full jazz effect.
