I feel compelled to defend my clear clarinet. Yes, I purchased one
of the Buffett B-12s. I sent an earlier missive on the subject but
it got lost in either the backwaters of the Net or Dan Leeson's
mailbox. I'm not sure which.

Anyway, the clarinet in question doesn't look all that bad (but
I do stay away from coffee and creamed spinach before I play it).
The horn fogs up as you play, and although clear, isn't all that
transparent-- the view inside tends to be "warped". Granted, I
tend to swab it out a bit more often than my other horns.

I bought it because I needed a sturdy, good sounding marching horn
(yes, some of us still torture ourselves by marching). It would
be a big nasty sin to take a decent Grenadilla wood clarinet out
into the elements and subject it to the kinds of stress marching
puts on it. Ideally, a good marching clarinet would be a well-made
metal one, with the ability to drown out all those nasty, sharp
piccolos. Until then, we make do.

The horn itself is very beautiful, and I get a lot of compliments on
it. I like the fact that I can stand out in the "glissandi of
clarinets" that make up the back end of a marching band, and
I'd take my clear Buffet over a fire engine red Vito any day of the
week.
