Please pardon it this is a repeat (or a variation there of).

Dan, you are right of course. John Denman does not seem to be
negatively influenced by his gold plated keys. He is a great
player.

Maybe the oboist in question didn't like the feel of the keys after
he had them plated. If the instrument looks good and feels good,
and the player feels good about it, it is reflected in the playing.

Gold is slicker than silver but not as slick as nickel.
