Dan, you're right, of course. John Denman, apart from being my
teacher while I was at the U of A, is a great player and a good
friend. I don't think the gold plating has had a negative influence
on his playing.

To each his own. If the instrument looks good and the player feels
good about it then it will reflect in his/her playing.

Maybe the oboe player in question didn't like the feel of it. Gold
is slicker than silver but not as slick as nickel.
