Interesting tidbits on the grenadilla wood. I wish I'd seen that
documentary.

In regard to your suggestion that instrument manufacturers use
other woods: At the double-reed convention In Bloomington, Indiana
this past summer, I understand many manufacturers are using other
woods - rosewood etc. - successfully. Maybe we (clarinetists)
should encourage manufacturers to experiment with other woods.
