Subj: Kegelstatt - last movement problems

Since several people have made reference to the last movement's problems
I thought that I would indicate which ones I was referring to just in case
someone has other problems in mind.

In the 1930s Schirmer decided to come out with a printing of the Kegelstatt
in a violin, viola, piano arrangement. So whoever was their editor took
the clarinet part and fixed it so that it works for a violin.

Well the ascending triplets in the last movement can't be played as written
on a violin because the start too low, so the editor broke the triplets in
a way that was serviceable for violin and that is the way the thing was heard
in that form ever since. You can still buy the violin/viola/piano version
from Schirmer.

At some later time Schirmer decided to publish the clarinet version and what
do you think they used as the source? That's right, the violin version. Well
whoever did that version took the fiddle part and simply transposed it as it
stood for clarinet. Bang!! That's why the Schirmer edition sucks for
clarinet.

I played it as a kid and always presumed it was right until I heard Kell do
it in the late 40s. I thought he was crazy making changes like that. Then
I heard someone else do it that way too. I thought he was crazy also.

Finally I got my head screwed on right. The only crazy one was me.
