Eight Pieces were writeen for his son Max Felix, who was the clarinettist
in the trio. He gave the first performance in 1909. Originally it was not
intended to write them all for the same combination of instruments. He was
going to use a harp instead of piano in 3,5 and 6 (these have slavic
influences) as a harp can better imitate a cymbalum. This was not done
however, probably due to a shortage of good harp players.

This work was not concieved as a cycle, infact Bruch advised against a
complete performance of the work. Except for the 7th (allegro vivace) all
movements are in the minor mode.
