I made earlier reference to the Mozart g minor symphony as being in two
versions, one with and one without clarinets. Jordan asks me which
g minor symphony, the big one or the little one. I should have been
more clear. It is the big one that bears the sequence number 40 (about
which there is a lot to be said because this sequence number is off by
about 15 - but that's another story).

There are two completely different versions of the work. It is not that
one version is equivalent to the other by simply adding or deleting clarinets.
Not at all. Mozart completely took the piece apart and reorchestrated it,
though for the life of me I don't know which one he did first.

I have heard both versions and they are simply spectacular, one because it
uses clarinets so beautifully and the other because it doesn't use clarinets
at all.
