In response to the earlier question about the odd instrumentation and
boring clarinet parts in Elgar's quintets... I have a recording of
some of these pieces which explains that Elgar wrote the pieces for
a particular group of acquaintances that played together regularly.
The vast difference in the difficulty of the parts was specially tailored
to the skill levels of the players in the group.
