Roy,

As you may suspect by now (from Jordan Selburn's wry, tongue-in-cheek
instructions, which are not be followed literally), Prokofieff wrote
the part for A clarinet. On each of the three occasions I've performed
this in the past, the orchestra conductor or librarian has passed out
both the A (original version) and Bb (optional transcribed version) parts,
to be used at the discretion of the player.

This music was also the subject of lively comment on the network
within the last four months. Although I've always used the A clarinet,
one of the players advised that, in his opinion, at least one passage, the
tree climb at No. 20, lays better on the Bb instrument. Next time,
I plan to give that part a try on the Bb.
