Klarinet Archive - Posting 000090.txt from 1994/08

There have been several posts recently regarding ligatures and their
impact both on sound and the ability to quickly change mouthpieces from
one clarinet to another. I used to play a Rovner which was miraculous
in keeping the reed in place, allowing for rapid instrument changes.
However, upon trying a Bonade (and subsequently a Harrison) the Rovner
seemed to deaden the sound unacceptably in comparison; of course, the
tradeoff with the Harrison is that I now can't remove the mouthpiece
without completely messing up the reed.
How do people feel about switching the entire mouthpiece/barrel
combination from Bb <-> A? A clarinet manufacturer has suggested this
as not only more mechanically secure, but it also has the advantage of
an already warmed-up barrel, so the pitch should stay fairly stable.
Has anybody tried this?
