Dave,
Recently I needed to find newsgroups which relate to
a certain set of keywords, but I found that from one
UseNet server to another, the lists of newsgroups are
slightly different. So I used Archie to search on
the keyword usenet and downloaded the biggest file I
could find. Even that turned out not to be a comprehensive
(5700 + newsgroups) list because there are quite a few
French newsgroups that didn't get on that list. Also, I only
downloaded the largest text file I could find. There may
be a .ZIP file that has even more lists.

Anyway, Archie provides an alternative that might be
useful to you. Good luck!
