Subj: bass clarinets playing bassoon music

Jordan comments on the general inadvisability of using the bass clarinet
as a bassoon substitute, and you certainly know my feelings on this.
I could not agree more. I was not suggesting that Andrea do so. My
remarks were only in response to her statement about what she intended to
so.

But it is amusing that one of the original reasons offered for the advantage
of the bass clarinet extending down to low written C was that, by doing so,
it could duplicate the range of the bassoon and therefore play some of
it's music without the octeave leap on the bottom.

There is an excellent quintet for bass clarinet and string quartet that
I would recommend to Andrea Bass Clarinetist Extraordinaire!! (or should
I call her "Ms Extraordinaire" to be politically correct)?
