Subj: Bass clarinet vs. bassoon

I have played 1st bassoon parts on the b.c. from time to time, and they have a
very awkward tendency to lie in the worst part of the b.c.'s compass, i.e.,
across the break, repeatedly, and using the indifferent notes at the bottom of
the clarino register. Apart from the playing difficulties and the dodgy sound
produced, the bass is simply not loud (or, at least, penetrative) enough in
this region of its compass to be convincing as a bassoon substitute.

That being said, Andrea H. may be a good enough player to make all this beside
the point, for all I know.
