I've never tried this, but might it work to get the player to play with
the mouthpiece 'upside down' (eg like early clarinettists) for a while
as well as 'normally'. This way, any 'slap' tonguing will just hit the
mouthpiece, and not the reed. The only way to stop the reed would be to
tongue properly on the end. This would obviously need some work to
develop another embouchure, but it needn't be developed for tone etc.,
just enough to get notes which can be tongued.

Any thoughts from the 'expert' players ?
