I'm afraid my experiences with Pad Savers are not good on better
instruments. I think the trick is #1 to get as much mositure out of the
instrument as possible. Also the register tubes of clarinets and the 8va
tuve in saxes cause a fair amount of lint. It is my experience that the lint
forms tiny compact balls over time and if lodged between the tonehole and
the pad, keep the pad from closing without undo pressure. A condition most
evident if one is a light touch player. When the lint is removed, if it has
been in place for a while, it leaves tiny indentations in the pads that
leak. I think they are ok for beginning students that are still getting used
to handling the instruments, especially larger instruments. I have very few
clients who are advanced players that use them. The saxophone prof here at
ASU does not want them used in the school owned instruments and discourages
their use among his students.
