Roger Shilcock and I were briefly discussing Lord Lytton and it dawned on
me that perhaps the rest of the board does not know who he is (and I doubt
if he played the clarinet).
He was the author who began a certain novel, "It was a dark and stormy night."
And ever since then, this opening line has been in the process of becoming
the most cliched opening line in literature. There is even a Lord Lytton
prize offered annually at the local college for the worst opening line
of a novel. It was recently won by a Texan with a blood and thunder piece
of text that went on (in a single sentence) for half a page.
