Quite.
From what I've heard of and from clarinets of ca. 1800, there is a marked
difference between the tone qualities of the chalumeau and clarion registers,
and the chalumeau is decidedly more difficult to manage. Re tone for the Mozart
concerto, no doubt we are going to have contributions on the lines of: if
Mozart/Beethoven/Alois Haba/Uncle Tom Cobleigh had had such-and-such an
instrument available in his day, he would have used it ...... (again)
