I'm surprised no one has mentioned the importance of the mouthpiece?
Agreed that the students mentioned were probably still working on their
embouchure, and the softness of the reeds may have been at issue, I think
they should not overlook the importance of the mouthpiece. In my experience
as a comparative beginner, I've found that matching the clarinet/reed to
mouthpiece is critical. I have three clarinets, 2 Bb's and an A. And for
each there is an optimum mouthpiece/reed combination that works for me.
Based on what I've experienced and read in the clarinet literature, working
toward the high register is probably similar to what a singer experiences
in extending range. The best approach is to work comfortably in the middle
registers building a firm foundation and letting the upper notes develop
naturally from this foundation. But, trying a mouthpiece with a shorter
facing and narrower gap might also contribute.
