Thanks for all the interest on this subject; for the person who asked where
LaTrobe University is, it is about 15 kms north of the city of Melbourne.
The music department is more academically based rather than performance
based, so there aren't a lot of clarinettists around!!! I assume that
Australian composers are not generally well known outside of Australia, but
I hope to change that even if only on a small scale!
There is a place in Sydney called the Australian Music Centre, who operate
for the benefit of composers in this country; they collect works and
recordings of them, and have quite a larger library, and also a sales
section, where scores can be purchased.(The good thing about this is that
the scores are not always published, but works can still be disseminated on
composers behalf as they allow autographs to be copied). I am sure many of
you have heard the works of Percy Grainger and perhaps Peggy Glanville-Hicks,
both of whom spent a great deal of their lives in the United States. Other
composers you may be interested in are listed here, with clarinet works-:
Edwards, Ross-Tower of remoteness:for clarinet and piano (1978) [Faber]
Banks, Don - Prologue, night piece and blues for two: cl & pf (1968)[Schott]
Sculthorpe, Peter - Songs of sea and sky :cl & pf (1987) [Faber]
Sitsky, Larry - Necronomicon:18 amorphisms for cl & pf (1989) [Seesaw]
Sutherland, Margaret - Sonata: cl or va & pf (?) [Currency Press 1993]
Leek, Stephen - Seashells for unaccompanied cl (1986) [facsimile score]
Ford, Andrew - Clarion for alto cl (1990) [facsimile score]
Sitsky, Larry - Vartarum for solo cl (1984) [Seesaw Music]
Brophy, Gerard - Twist: for solo cl (1993) [facsimile score]
Tahourdin, Peter - Sonata: cl & pf (1962) [facsimile]
Hyde, Miriam - Sonata in f minor:cl & pf (1949) [facsimile]
These works range from fairly conservative harmony to the highly idiomatic,
and I am sure that many of you out there would be happy to have works which
are unusual, and in some cases quite unique in your repetoire!!
There are many other works that have clarinet, especially ensemble pieces,
and I am sure that it would be possible to acquire a catalog of these from
the AMC. If there is some interest, I can give an e-mail address to contact
them, as well as a regular mailing address if necessary.
Bye for now, Michelle
